Tips for a Winter Move

It’s never ideal to move in the winter. Everyone is busier than ever, with events, deadlines, and all the holiday hustle. In some places, it’s likely to be freezing. This could cause the moving experience to be pretty unpleasant.

 

If you have no choice but to move during the winter, don’t worry. There are many advantages to moving during the winter, as it can save you money. In addition, you might also get more services as there isn’t as much demand during the winter months. 

 

Here are some ideas to consider if you must move during winter!

 

Hire Professional Movers

Professional moving companies have experience moving items in all kinds of weather and situations. Expect your moving expenses to be lower in winter compared to when it's peak season. With the help of professional movers, you can save money and time. Plus, it's one less thing you have to worry about while moving during the winter. 

 

Start Early in the Day

In winter, our days are just shorter. That’s why you must start moving early to get the most daylight possible while you're moving. For safety purposes, trying to move at night may not be the best choice. 

 

Keep Winter Gear Handy

It’s important to set aside all of your winter clothes, such as jackets, hats, gloves, and boots so that you have them ready to wear on the day of your move. Things can easily be forgotten or misplaced when moving gets hectic. Be more prepared by packing an overnight bag, too. It should contain all the necessary items to make a move a little easier, such as a toothbrush, clothes, and sheets. Also, make sure to bring those winter accessories such as boots and hats. Consider throwing in an old towel or blanket to help clean off snowy or wet boots.

 

Clear Parking Spots

If you live in a city that gets snow, you should prepare for the morning of your move by clearing your doorway and ensuring a clear path to the moving truck. This can be done by plowing it out the morning of your move or the night before, then marking it with traffic cones. Another option is to contact your local government and ask for special parking signs.

 

Watch the Utilities

Before moving into a new home, you must have the power company set up and turn on the utilities. Doing so will allow you to enjoy the first night in your new residence without experiencing any heat issues. However, it doesn’t mean you should crank the heat up after entering the house. Leave the temperature low for the first few hours to avoid wasting energy as your door is still open. Don't forget to turn off utilities at your old residence, either!

 

Protect Electronics

Electronics are susceptible to the cold. They may be fully charged, but cold temps will run that battery down! Laptops, flatscreens, tablets, and more need to be protected from freezing temperatures. Ensure they're packed with extra packing materials or clothing to keep warmth in their storage containers.
